Jesus is…Apostle

  • Hebrews 3:1-2 – Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.
  • Apostle – One sent forth with a special message or commission; whose message and commission are supernaturally endowed to plant miraculous seed springing forth unto a new corporate organism…the ecclesia of believers, the assembled saints of God, the body of Christ.
  •  Father God, in times before creation, commissioned His Son to be sent into the fallen world to save, reconcile, and restore His creation.  Jesus was sent and broke-through from the heavenly realm into ours, and He grew and tirelessly labored in the eternal purpose of God to plant the supernatural, unstoppable seed of His life.  What was His special message?  “Behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, repent and believe, enter into this new creation by faith, and follow me faithfully [growing, loving, and serving] until I return.
  • Do you ever feel alone or lost?  Jesus is commissioned by God to come to you, comfort you, heal you, deliver you, and raise you up into a community of believers for fellowship and spiritual growth.  In times of darkness or despair, do not give yourself over to the temptation of unbelief, doubting Jesus.  But by faith, stand, believing that He is your Apostle; sent to build you up as a living stone inside His house.  In due season, you will see that He is faithful and comes to those who have kept-on their breastplate of faith, and gives them rest in His house.

  • Do you ever notice people who don’t quite seem to fit-in with the patterns and flows of the world?  They just don’t seem to be getting the same enjoyments out of what everyone else seems to think is so great?  Perhaps they show up to work, but it’s not their life.  They are in the club or social group, but aren’t getting totally absorbed into it.  They’re sort of like a donkey in a herd of horses.  They can do all the same stuff and keep up with the crowd, but just don’t quite seem to be “one of them”.  Son of God, you are to go to them, and offer them the living water that quenches their thirst.  The Apostle lives in you, and from within you compels you to go and seek those who’re hungering for more than the world can give and offer them the Bread of Life.  Saint of God, you too are a sent one; for the Sent One lives in and through you.

Jesus is…Amen

  • Revelation 3:14 – These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God:
  •  Amen – Firm, trustworthy, so be it, surely, faithful, truly, “verily, verily”; A word used to affirm and confirm a statement.
  •  Jesus not only HAS the final say in all matters, He IS the final word in EVERY matter.  He is the faithful witness who stands before the Father in the divine court and bears witness on behalf of those who are in Him.  His person, His life, His righteousness, His testimony, His truth. He boldly stands tall as the affirming and confirming declaration of the final statement regarding the status of creation, and there are none who can bear witness against Him.
  •  Precious child of God, today’s passage from Revelation 3 is a sobering one.  The Amen says to some in His Church; “I will vomit you out of my mouth”, “Be zealous and repent”, and “To him who overcomes, I will grant to sit with Me on My throne”.  We must not take for granted that the final Word on our life will be “come sit with Me”; but we must strive daily against lukewarmness and to overcome the worldly temptation to believe that we are rich and in need of nothing.  Cry out to the Amen to stop knocking and come in, to love you, to anoint your eyes, to rebuke you, to chasten you, to dine with you, and to give you grace to overcome.  It is not enough to merely have said a “sinner’s prayer”, been baptized in water, and regularly attend Sunday services; you must be as gold refined in the fire to overcome and hear the Amen (the true and faithful witness) say “come and sit”.
  •  So many people are battling confusion, anxiety, and troubles of infinite variety.  Dear ambassador of truth, they need the final word on their matter; the Amen.  Boldly bear witness that verily, verily, Jesus IS the final word to them; and then help them to gain the testimony that Jesus IS their Amen.

Rejection…….or not???

  • Matthew 16:33 – But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
  • James 4:7 – Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
  • Hebrews 4:12 – For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Lord has been teaching me about rejection this week through these 3 scriptures.

How do you think Peter felt when Jesus said to him (“at him” is a more accurate way to say it, in my view) “get behind me Satan”?  How would you feel if someone that you loved, trusted, and respected said that to you?  I’d say that the majority off us would be highly offended.

But when you really think the situation through, and accept the reality that the enemy can do his dastardly, counterfeit work by implanting his thoughts and emotions in our soul (mind/will/emotions) in an effort to get us to react by his leading instead of responding by Christ-in-us, then it transforms the scenario from an offense, to a loving and kingdom-building action.  The James 4 passage above instructs us to resist the devil, and this scene with Peter is one example of what that looks like when he’s working through a person.  Jesus’ love-for and commitment-to Peter were both still rock-solid.  He wasn’t even dealing with Peter as much as He was dealing with Satan.  But it would sure take a higher, less self-righteous, more humble, and wise perspective on Peter’s behalf to not feel rejected from this exchange.

If Peter realized that our Lord of Hosts and Mighty Warrior King was drawing His sword and taking dominion over Satan, and slicing him out of Peter’s soul, and enabling him to be more of the Spirit (Hebrews 4:12); then Peter’s reaction would be much less offense and rejection, and much more agreement, thanks, and praise.  He’d be more like a P.O.W. who’d been been brainwashed into dominating his fellow prisoners in service to his captors; and had been rescued, set-free; and then employed with the glorious task of leading the effort to get the rest of his fellow prisoners loosed.

So the next time you feel rejected, or worry about whether someone feels rejected by you; pray for the Lord to grant you discernment.  Discernment as to whether the enemy is being resisted, or if someone’s truly being unkind.

Jesus is…Alpha

  • Revelation 1:8 – “I am the Alpha…”
  •  Alpha – Idiomatic for designating the universe and every kind of power: alpha, beginning, first.  By calling Jesus Christ the Alpha, the writer of the book of Revelation acknowledged that He is the Creator all things.
  •  Jesus is the seed from which all life springs forth.  Creation erupted from Him, God’s workings in the earth and history begin and re-begin with Him, and the next age where God restores His creation also begins with His return; a new beginning springing forth from the Alpha!  Come quickly Lord Jesus, our Alpha!
  •  Your salvation began with Him, your deliverance begins with Him, and your good days began with Him.  He IS the beginning of all good, productive, and life-giving things.  Go to Him the moment your eyes open in the morning and experience the Alpha for your day.  Go to Him at the beginning of your marriage, business decision, health problem, relational issue, time of trouble or praise; and call on the Alpha for the power of Jesus to begin or begin again.
  • Be on the alert for how you can be an Alpha for someone else.  Who in your life needs a new beginning, or to realize that Jesus was at the beginning but now they have moved off of the Alpha’s path onto their own and need to go back to the beginning?  Can you help someone start their day or a new season of life by blessing them in the name of your Alpha, and encouraging them to start with Jesus and proceed forth from Him?  Jesus IS the Alpha.

Flesh vs. Spirit [Example from jogging]

The other day, I was going for an early morning jog.  Some mornings I’m really energetic and ready-to-roll, and other mornings I’m lower-energy and simply persevering through it for the health benefits.  This particular morning was on the lower-energy side of the scale.

Part of the way through the jog, the Lord began to speak to me about my posture and breathing.  I had never noticed this before, but on higher-energy days my posture is good and upright and my breathing is deep and consistent for the whole run; and I seem to just power through it and really enjoy the jog.  But on lower-energy days (like this one), my posture is slouchy and my breathing is shallow, and the whole jog seems like a drudge.

The Lord highlighted to me that on lower-energy days, when my “drive” is down and my flesh is weak, that I have a tendency to try to shift the work of the jog onto my skeleton because my muscles just “don’t want to”.  This is why my posture is bad…because my body is trying to do as little work as possible by leaning on the structure that supports it, rather than the flesh that’s designed to carry it.  And my breathing becomes more shallow, because my flesh is more interested in resting than in exercising.

Jesus then showed me that this situation is typical on several levels.  For example, in a group context like church-life, family-life, or work-life; if someone is having a lazy-day or a lazy-season, or a lazy-life, then they’ll rely on the structure that’s in place to carry them as they try to take a little responsibility as possible to achieve as low of an amount of exertion as they can get by with.  They’ll be physically present, but their preparation and contribution for the group will be minimal or non-existent; and they’ll be looking to do more receiving than giving.

Back in a jogging context, relying too much on the skeletal structure puts unhealthy levels of stress on the body in places like the joints, and can wear them out prematurely.  And shallow breathing leaves the muscles in a constant state of fatigue, and provokes a nagging desire to quit.

On a personal level and a group level, it’s important put off the temptation towards leaning on the structure and resting out of laziness, and to follow Paul’s advice in 1 Corinthians 9:

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.  And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.  Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.  But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

The flesh is lazy, but the Spirit is not.  And when the flesh is “feeling lazy”, the Spirit is still ready to roll.  Christ Jesus lives in us and He is always motivated.  His spirit will quicken our bodies to press into the responsibilities that He has given us, but it does require us to say no the lazy flesh and listen to the Spirit’s promptings instead.  When we do, then we’ll experience the fresh wind of His spirit blowing us beyond our natural abilities and inclinations, and we’ll enjoy the satisfaction of the fruit of godly determination.

Jesus is…the Almighty

  • Revelation 1:8 “I am”…says the Lord…”the Almighty.”
  •  Almighty – All powerful, all-ruling, absolute and universal sovereign.
  •  Jesus has unimaginably more authority and power than history’s richest, most militarily equipped, and totally established dictators.  He is able to speak commands and demand absolute and immediate obedience from person or thing (“even the wind and waves obey Him!”).  He rules His Kingdom with a rod of iron and there is none that can oppose Him.
  •  Subject of the King; trust Him as sovereign over you.  For His rule, while absolute, is saturated with love and wisdom; and is always exercised for the good of His subjects.
  •  And remember that you are His ambassador, sent into this world to do business in His name.  You too have been given realms of authority to rule over and you must rule them with a rod of iron for there must be one will to be done…His will.  But also remember that the Almighty says the greatest in His kingdom is the servant, and your authority must also be governed by love and wisdom, and always exercised for the good of those over whom you have authority.

Jesus is…Advocate

  • 1 John 2:1 – My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
  • Advocate – Intercessor, Counselor – The word advocate might designate a consulting lawyer or one who presents his client’s case in open court; or one who, in times of trial or hardship, sympathizes with the afflicted and administers suitable direction and support.
  •  In the divine court, Satan is our accuser and Jesus is our lawyer.  Satan is a master accuser and can easily expose every detail of your life that does not measure up to God’s standard of righteousness, and every sin that he enters into the case against us is completely accurate.  However, once his accusatory remarks are concluded and we are standing naked and condemned before the court, Jesus, with complete understanding and empathy regarding our condition, arises and presents His blood as our defense.  Immediately, the gavel falls and the verdict is trumpeted; NOT GUILTY by reason of the blood.
  •  Saint of God, boldly take the robe and signet ring of your Lord and walk forth in this life with absolute assurance that your sins are forgiven.  Your case has been argued, and your Almighty Advocate has seen to it that you were found not guilty.  Your life is no longer a struggle to be found guiltless before the divine court, but your life is now to be breaking free from the chains the enemy used to drag you into court; and to be going forth in freedom to serve your King and His people; and to be His ambassador in your area of responsibility in the earth.
  •  And as you go about your life, remember the wisdom and love of your Advocate; and you too be and an understanding and empathetic advocate for others.  Let your voice rise above Satan’s as you trumpet the good news that you heard on your day in court…”YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN AND YOU ARE FREE”.

Workhorse [Meekness]

I saw a horse standing, calm and bold.  It had a well-used harness attached, but no saddle.  It’s muscles toned and large from many, many days of hard work; but it had plenty more where that came from.

I sensed the horse’s “attitude” as wise, calm, confident, and ready-to-serve.

The Lord said, “this is meekness; great strength and competence, under control of the Holy Spirit, and guided by love and wisdom.”

The Fatherless Indians

There once was a tribe of indians who a long time ago lived out in the wild and dangerous wilderness.  They were a normal tribe, who’s days  were spent living, hunting, birthing, fighting, farming, loving,  building, caring, and carrying on with all the normal things of which  life consists. There were other tribes all over too.  Some fairly were  close by.  But most were distant, and this tribe only had vague ideas  of what the far-off ones were really like.  With the closer tribes,  they mostly lived in ways where their paths sometimes crossed as each  went about the activities of daily living.  Sometimes there were  skirmishes, but mostly there was relative peace, and sometimes they even had seasons of working together towards a mutually beneficial venture.

Then one day, things drastically, suddenly, and tragically changed…forever.  One of the distant tribes, who to this tribe were only a cloudy, shadowy people of whom they had very little real knowledge, came with a fierce and awesome vengeance to attack.  While this little tribe lived in relative peace, focused for generations on simple daily living; the attackers had been bent on mastering the art of war, conquest, and bloodshed.  The little tribe, who for some unknown reason seemed to be almost singled out for this vicious attack, never stood a chance.  They tried to rally the troops because they were a valiant and courageous people.  They quickly gathered up the spears, axes, bows, and whatever weapons they had.  All the hunters, and the ones who had shown some natural ability for fighting in the little skirmishes they’d had with the neighboring tribes, were rushed to be first to confront the attacking tribe.  But all was lost before the first warhorse even charged into the camp.  The others were masters of war.  The hunters and braves were annihilated with disturbing ease.  The attacking tribe, without the slightest hesitation, immediately turned and methodically and feverishly began seeking out and putting to death the rest of the men and fighting-age boys.  Next the attackers, in almost dance-like synchronization, moved on to killing even the women and older girls.  All that was left was a few structures, some damaged tools & weapons, and a little food…barely anything because all the rest had been trampled under the stampede of relentless warhorse hooves.  And the children were left; nursing babies, playful little boys & girls, and 1 or 2 who were barely teenagers.  Dazed.  Confused.  In shock.  Left alone in the wilderness. No fathers. No mothers.  The tribe of war didn’t waste their energy on them, knowing they’d soon perish in the hard, unfeeling, predator-infested wilderness.

But in the heart of one or two of the older children, the ones who were barely teenagers, there was an immediate voice that spoke on the inside and seemed to awaken out of no where.  It was tender and yet seemed as though the strength of all the earth and universe was behind it.  The voice was whispering “I am the Father to the fatherless”.  “You will be my tribe now, and now I will care for you”.  “Learn to look to me, and I will teach you My ways”.

Since the voice came from places the children could not see, it was difficult for them to learn the new ways.  Since they were all children, they mostly lived each day by reacting to their childish drives for stimulation in play, fighting over which teepee who gets to sleep in, who gets to keep which shiny tool or weapon in his or her teepee, who gets what to eat, what games would be played, who decides things, and so on. Some of the older children, overcome by the fear of not surviving, ventured out to see if one of the other tribes would take them in.  But for the ones who stayed, over time, the One behind the voice slowly helped them see His protective wall, consistent provision, wise ways, and great love.  They eventually realized, one by one, that with the One behind the voice, they actually have a much better tribe than when they even had their fathers and mothers.  They began to stop fighting over childish things, only thinking of and working towards what each wants for himself, and they actually learned to care for each other and depend on each other for survival.  They grew to do much more than merely survive, too.  They grew to thrive!  The power they sensed behind the voice was only revealed to them as they looked back and realized they had not only survived after the attack that took their fathers and mothers, and the blanketing fear that walked through the doors of gaping wounds left from their absence; but that the One had actually been more closely caring for them than their real parents could have ever even imagined.  The One behind the voice had grown them into a thriving beacon of His glory… revealing the true force of His power…Divine Love.

The little tribe spent the rest of their time banded together, enjoying the One behind the voice’s love, helping each other see His ways more clearly, grow to love and live in His ways; providing for each other, fighting for each other, serving each other, raising their children so that they can see and know Him, and embracing anyone who drifted in and desired to follow the One behind the voice with them.

Praise to the One behind the voice!

For my brothers and sisters.

Love you all,

Trevor

Flying by the instruments [Responding vs. reacting]

One day I was driving to have breakfast with a friend @ 5:30AM in the pouring rain. I drove up behind a semi which was throwing oceans of water back on my windshield and I lost all visibility except right off the front-edge of my hood. All I could see through the torrents of rain being handled by my furiously waiving windshield wipers was the front of my hood and the back door of his trailer.

In a split second, my mind reacted in panic to irrationally jerk the steering wheel left and right. I guess it just wanted to DO SOMETHING. But I quickly got self-control and remembered that I had driven the road 100’s of times, and that I just needed to hold ‘er steady and wait for him to get over; and then I could safely and calmly sail on by with no turning required.

After getting by the truck, the Lord led me to reflect on the training that pilots go through to learn to fly by instruments. Most of you have probably heard of the condition called “vertigo” where pilots, when flying through clouds or at night (etc), can have an overwhelming sensation that the plane has gone upside down when it hasn’t; and then while trying to correct the problem by turning it back over, they can crash the plane. To overcome this potential disaster, the pilots are rigorously trained to take their eyes off of the horizon and put them onto their instruments.

The Lord began to teach me that this is what the daily battle to move from reacting by the flesh to responding by the Spirit is like. Our fleshly reactions to most of life’s situations are like my reaction to the lost vision and a pilot’s to vertigo. Getting self-control and transitioning our gaze from earthly/natural things onto The Way, and learning to respond by the spirit are the keys to overcoming in this life.

Also, a very sobering warning that came with this teaching was that our fleshly reactions are designed to kill us. But praise the Lord that His spirit brings forth life.
